For AI help built into the software, the big names are TurboTax (Intuit Assist) and H&R Block (AI Tax Assist). For lowest cost, FreeTaxUSA (free federal) and Cash App Taxes (free federal and state) lead, but we did not find an AI assistant feature in either.

[1] Its Free Edition covers simple Form 1040 returns only, and TurboTax says roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify. H&R Block: AI Tax Assist in DIY Online and Desktop
H&R Block says AI Tax Assist is available in both DIY Online and Desktop software, and offered free tax pro review for new paid DIY Online clients through Feb. 28, 2026. [4] It says approximately 52% of filers qualify for its Online Free Edition. [5]
FreeTaxUSA: lowest-cost for complex returns
Federal returns are free, state returns are $15.99, and Pro Support is $64.99. [6] Pair it with a general chatbot for explanations.
